WARTIME CIVILIAN RECEIVER ( FITTED LONG WAVE ADAPTOR) FITTED 1950 (SOLD)

known as the Utility set and was designed by Dr G.D.Reynolds of Murphy Radio Ltd. It was an effective but basic single waveband (MW) receiver. The design resulted to minimise raw materials and labour and was manufactured by over 40 different company's, identified only by a U followed by a number on the back. This radio was built by a unknown company, no U number. Even the valves were given special codes just to make it interesting !. During the first twelve months from June 1944 over 175,000 of these sets were produced to eradicate the shortage of wireless sets at the time and costing £12 3s 4d including purchase tax were still costly.

So if you would like to buy into a little of our second world war history, this is the one for you, the case made out of pine finish is all original and has not been touched. The chassis is very interesting as I would guess was modified to receive Long Wave in the 1950's. This set has had a large amount of modification to the chassis compared to off the shelf kits which became in late 1945. There is an extra detector valve also 6V6 GT audio valve fitted. The I.F's have been replaced with 1950's portable radio . As can be seen in the photo's this was a lot of construction and i can only wonder if a radio constructor magazine helped in this modification ?. The radio works very well and most of the valves are the original ones fitted at the time, also it has its original production ticket still present which is quite rare. All in all a very interesting piece of social history. Comes with 6 months warranty.
