 Servicing and repairing

I get a lot of enquirys from people who wish to have their radio's repaired, from simple broken dial cords to full repair and service. These are often from Ebay purchases that were perhaps not quite accurate as to the working condition or again from collectors who are now looking to get a particular radio working rather than just for display.

At first most people will contact me via the phone as to what I am able to offer them, and I can recommend using the parcel2go site as a convenient and cost effective way to have your radio picked up from your home and delivered to me so I can at first undertake a evaluation on it before any work is carried out and give you a price relating to it.

This way the customer can feel confident that they will not get an unsheduled bill far in excess to what was either discused or to the value of the unit itself; Of course a radio that has been in your family for a long period of time will have a greater intrinsic value than perhaps a recent purchase.

As a member of the British Vintage Wireless Society , the radio itself has more value to me rather than what can i think i could charge and get away with it concept. Thats why when I have bought radios in for parts I end up repairing them. This happened to me recently on a Goblin Time Spot, The case looked like it had been dropped from a great height, missing panel etc, but I just could not scrap it, it just felt wrong

Cabinet repairs (before)

FRENCH POLISHING OR POLYURETHANE FINISH AND CABINET REPAIRS

Radio's, cabinets and of course record players over time loose there warm glow, or even colour if exposed to bright sunlight over extended periods of time. The cabinets if early models in particular may well have been glued with animal glues and if exposed to damp conditions will separate, creating additional problems. But that said timber based products are repairable in most cases. Veneers can be re-fitted and matched and the finish can be greatly improved. These days there are a number of modern finishes which work rather well, Clear Gloss finish Polyurethane is very good for every day use, resilient to alcohol and does not scratch easy. Or I can French Polish, it is all done by hand, and can be finished to either a low lustre or up to what is termed in piano restoration as a mirror finish

After (French polish finish)

This is a McMichael 135 looking rather sad. This was stripped back to bare wood and re-stained with a antique Mahogany finish as seen in mid 18th century furniture (rich red) I understand that radio's had not quite been developed then, but it gives it an interesting look. The completed case with stand is below, now waiting for the electronics to be refurbished.
