Reel To reel tape machines

Reel to Reel recorders like vinyl in records are here to stay.

The period tape machines like Ferrograph were hand built to last and were built  in the UK, just like the classic radio's of the same period use off the shelf components . With that classic valve sound and mechanical design whats not to like. Every instutution had them BBC, schools, armed forces and if you were lucky the private owner to .With the correct servicing some 50 years later they are  as good as the day they left the factory

Retro with Classic designs are now very popular. There are a number of client's who collect from a certain decade, this can be for personal interest or as props in television or film, through to interior design. At times we are asked to supply good looking models but are not fully functional. If there is a particular period radio you require please contact me to your specific needs so we c

an do the hard work for you.

Communication receivers

Why buy a classic  short wave receiver ?.The answer to that is the same as to why does someone pay £1000's for a classic car, its not for the performance .  A new ford will beat a DB5 and most 1970's super cars are so unreliably that they are admired rather than in regular use. A classic short wave receiver is at least very reliable and performs very well, but cannot say compete with  a FT1000.  Perhaps when we were yonger we would have loved to have own one  but  it was  outside our price  range.  Today its a number of things, living the past, enjoying the styling and of course passionate about radio's.

I have had an interest in short wave receivers from the early 1970's thanks to being introduced to amateur radio by a school friend. when I realised that the whole world was at your finger tips and even today despite modern technology and people who often travel the world making it a smaller place this statement is just as true as in the past and with that in mind I hoped that one day I would have the chance to repair/restore equipment I either wish I had or was then the standard in use at the time. So over time I will be offering models from a few known makes for sale.

Trio 9R5DS communications receiver (BOXED)

I first purchased one of these back in 1971 then costing £50 a lot of money for a 15 year old who was earning just £5 per week. So why one of these, simple, superb selectivity due to the Colins mechanical filter very good sensitivity and great value for the money . A continous coverage from 550 Khz to 30 Mhz with SSB reception and band spread for the Amateur bands with S meter and noise filter fitted. Despite Trio's advertising quote"Unusually stable operation is obtained through special design and shielding" its like a political advertisment , would you belive it, No, but for broadcast reception its brilliant on SSB you have to adjust the reception, but even with this its a great all round short wave receiver and that is why they were very popular with Hams and short wave enthusiasts even today. They offer a great retro style which still looks smart.

This radio has been taken apart, I have replaced all known components that have aged , all the valves have been fully tested and any just below par were replaced , in this instance 3. The I.F 455 Khz re-aligned and the RF sections for each band has been fully calibrated and set up as to the original specification, its just like it was some 40 plus years ago, brings back some happy memory's.

The radio has been cleaned and comes complete with its original box and operating instructions, and looks just months old with 6 months gurantee. Though there was room Trio never fitted an internal loud speaker to these and therefore there is on the back a 4 or 8 Ohm external loud speaker terminal . Trio offered a matching speaker SP-5DS as an extra, this is supplied to compliment this radio.

Drake SPR-4 Communications receiver ( full manual and service manual can be sent) SOLD

A very fine near perfect example of the famous Drake range these were the short wave listeners radio of choice. These receivers were first produced in 1969 and stayed in production for a decade and was the first solid-state communications receiver from Drake. The receiver picks up AM, CW, SSB and has additional filter for CW switched from the back S meter, Notch Filter, RF gain control and pre-selector Internally its mint, very clean and everything  works as it should , perfectly

These came as standard with built in crystals given 500 khz tuning range on the:

150-500 Khz

0.5-1.0 Mhz

1.0-1.5 Mhz

6.0-6.5 Mhz

7.0-7.5 Mhz

9.5-10.0 Mhz

11.5-12.0 Mhz

15.0-15.5 Mhz

17.5-18.0 mhz

21.5-22.0 Mhz

Then you could purchase additional crystals for the remaining frequencys that you wanted, these are an easy plug in.

I have added 6 more for the Amature bands, 160 , 80, 20, 15 and 10 metres as 40 was already supplied.

Using this system makes the radio very selective and stable, it also has a brilliant notch filter and built in loud speaker. There is so much on these on the web, with many first class reviews. I can on request send you  the full spec and user/service manual , some 65 pages, comes with 6 months gurantee, you will not find a better example
